Chika lay in the library. Her head was on a book that she had been reading earlier. She was on her stomach, her blue jacket draped over her like a blanket, covering her head. A small bump moved a few times, revealing a tiny kitten from under the jacket. It leaped onto the book and let out a mew, bumping Chika's head.
When it was clear that the sleeping girl was not going to be roused so easily, the kitten began to stomp about the room. Chika's tail twitched slightly, along with her ear. She let out a muffled purr, curling up on the floor, her head on the book. She looked quite content.

Ty was walking through the library, just wandering. He was bored, and couldn't think of anything else to do. So there he was, walking and staring blankly into spa-THUD!
Ty tripped, and fell flat on his face. He rolled to his feet and saw who he'd tripped over. "Chick! Oh, man...I'm sorry! I didn't see you there, Chick!"

Chika was roused suddenly when something tripped over her. She looked around, both hurt and startled, but calmed down slightly when she saw it was Ty. Though this didn't stop a bit of static from rising from her form.
She sat up and wrapped her arms around her legs. "Hi, Ty," she whispered. "It's ok. I shouldn't sleep in here anyway...Abe might get mad at me for drooling on a book." She looked at her knees, her tail wagging slightly. She jumped, startled, as little teeth sank themselves into her tail. She looked around and picked up the kitten. "Buttons," she scolded quietly, "you shouldn't do that."

Ty looked at her. "Well, I sleep in here all the time," he said with a laugh. "I'm sorry I didn't see you." He laughed as the cat nibbled her tail. Sitting down next to Chika, he said, "I didn't scare ya or hurt ya, did I Chick?"

She leaned against him, looking up with big eyes. She shook her head. "No. I'm used to people not seeing me. The scientists at the lab used to trip over me a lot. It only hurt when one of them stepped on my tail." She absently pet Buttons, then wiggled her fingers for him. "Have you drooled on one of his books?" she asked.
She was scared of Abe. But that mostly had to do with the thing around his neck. It made her jump every time the water moved in it.

"Actually....yeah..." Ty said with a wink, leaning against her. "BUT....he doesn't know about it." He let out a laugh. "I'm sorry to hear about the lab. But, we've all got something we have to live with. Some are just more free to talk about it than others..."

She snuggled against him. "I didn't mind," she said, looking down at the kitten. "I was just saying that's why it didn't hurt." She looked up at him with a smile. "And I'm glad to be here. There are more people like...like me. No more poking and prodding." She made a face.
"And I get to see you and Hellboy." She smiled widely at this realization. "After Mommy left, I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't been there." She lay her head against his chest.

Ty smiled as she snuggled him. She was one of his closest friends there. Basically, Chika, Hellboy, and Hannah were his three closest. Hannah was just closer because they'd both been taken in at around the same time.
"Glad to have you here, Chick. I can imagine. And you know what? I'll always be here for you." He smiled, leaning his head against a bookshelf and relaxing.

"Good. You won't leave me like Mommy?" She looked up at him pleadingly, her small frame looking even smaller somehow. She knew that "leaving" was the same as "dying", but she couldn't really admit to herself that her mother was dead.
She scooted closer to him so she could sit on his lap. "Because if you do, I'll never forgive you," she whispered seriously. "And neither will Buttons."
The kitten let out a mew as she picked him up and put him on her chest. She pet him, smiling as he began to purr. "See, he says he won't either."

"No...I promise I won't 'leave,'" Ty said, using her terminology. Sure, he knew he couldn't promise her tomorrow, especially with his line of work, and the Hive case especially. But, he had to. He gave her sort of an awkward one armed hug.
"Besides, I have too much fun here!" Then he got serious. "Look, Chick. Hannah may be 'Sis' to me, but you're like a sister too, except without the water and gun-happiness." He grinned.

She smiled up at him, but her ears twitched. He was telling her what she wanted to hear. She could tell by the inflections in his voice. But she didn't care. She would make him stick to his answer.
She shuddered when he mentioned water. "I don't like water..." she mumbled. "It's...wet." She bit her lip, then smiled. "I'm glad I'm your sister," she said. "You're mine too," she added happily. She still sometimes had problems with genders. Especially when it came to family. So to her, a sister wasn't specific to any gender.

Ty looked at her. "I understand. We all have things we don't like."
He let out a laugh. "I'm glad you feel that way, Chick, but I'd be your brother. Sister is used for girls, brother for guys, understand?" he explained gently.

"Brothers are for boys?" she asked. "But how do you tell again? Because some of the others my age look like both." She turned her eyes to Ty, confused. She had read that boys and girls were built differently, but that really didn't make much sense to her.
"What are you afraid of?" she added.

"Never mind," he said with a smile, in an attempt to avoid an awkward subject.
"Me? Well....I don't normally talk about this, but...I'm afraid of...losing those I'm close to....and there being nothing I can do about it...like my parents...."

"I wish I could have helped my mommy too...Then maybe she wouldn't have left me. And neither would the other scientists have. Right, Buttons?" She lifted him up to put him in Ty's face. "He likes you."
She leaned against him. "I won't leave you, either, Ty. And I'll make sure Hannah doesn't either." She crossed her arms, nodding. "Even if she ascares me a bit..." She reddened a little.
